Forgetting the router password is very common because you are normally advised to change the password when you first set it up and you don’t really need to access the router options anymore when you’ve finished configuring it. It is quite troublesome when you forget the router password because some important information such as the key/password for your wireless connection and your ISP username/password for the internet connection are saved in the router. If you can’t access your router’s configuration, you can’t change the wireless key or update your ISP connection information.
The most obvious advice you’d find on the Internet is to simply hard reset the router back to default configuration but we’d leave that as a last resort because doing so will also reset everything and you’ll have to reconfigure the router. Here are some possible ways to access your router if you’ve forgotten the password.
1. Default Router Password
This guide has been moved to: It is better organized and easier to follow. It is also more general and therefore may apply to any similar Technicolor device not originally listed here. Asynchronous digital subscriber line (DSL or ADSL) modem is a device used to connect a computer or router to a telephone line which provides the digital subscriber line service for connectivity to the Internet, which is.
If you don’t remember changing the router password and can’t find the manual which normally has the default password printed on it, your best bet is to try searching for the default password for the model of your router. In fact, most non-savvy computer users don’t bother changing the router password anyway.
Here are 3 websites that have a huge database of default router passwords. You will need to know the brand and model of your router which can normally be found on the router itself. If you’re unable to find your router’s model listed on the database, you can try a combination between “admin”, “password”, “1234”, “root”, “blank” (nothing) or the router’s brand name.

2. RouterPassView
Most of the routers out there allow you to export or save the current configuration settings and if you’ve previously done that, you can use an excellent tool called RouterPassView to decrypt the encrypted password that is saved in the configuration file. For example, Belkin routers save the configuration file as user.conf while D-Link is backupsettings.conf.
If RouterPassView is able to decrypt the password in the router configuration file, the process is instant. As useful as RouterPassView is, you need to have a backup of the configuration file first and the tool itself must be able to support your router or else you’ll get nothing out of it.

3. Router Password Kracker
Another possible method to recover the forgotten router password is to crack the password through a dictionary attack. This would mean you will use a piece of software to automatically attempt to login to the router based on a list of words found in a dictionary file. The program itself comes with a password list (passlist.txt) which contains the most commonly used words for a router password.
Unless the router you’re trying to crack has a brute force protection that temporarily bans your IP address after a few failed logins, the cracking process should be quite fast if you’re doing this via local network. Obviously the chance of cracking the router password is quite slim, especially if you have changed it to something personal, but at least it is fully automated and much faster if compared to manually typing the passwords.

4. Hard Reset
If all else fails, you’re probably left with the last option which is to reset the router back to its factory settings. You can normally find a small pinhole with the word reset on top of it at the back of your router. To reset it, simply use a pin or bent paperclip to press the button and hold it for 30 seconds while the router is turned on.
The disadvantage in hard resetting a router back to its default factory settings is you will need to reconfigure everything such as your Internet connection, custom firewall settings, port forwarding if you’re not using uPnP, wireless settings and optionally the DNS, Dynamic DNS, remote management, MAC address filtering and etc. In our experience, the most important piece of information is probably your ISP username and password because most people tend to forget the password, just like the router because you don’t really need to change it once it has been configured.
Additional Tip: You might also want to check the bottom of the router because some routers, especially those supplied by an ISP, have a sticker with the default username and password to login to the router.

Thanks rotten_apple for pointing out the mistake. In this video, you will learn how to do port forwarding and do your metasploit hack over WAN or internet. The reason why the usual metasploit LAN hack do not work over the internet is because the ip address that you get when you run ifconfig( or ipconfig in windows) is the local or private IP address which is assigned to your computer by your router. It is not the IP address that goes over the internet. To find out your public IP address, google 'whats my ip' and that will give your public IP address.
Hacking over WAN is done by configuring a setting on your router called Port Forwarding. So in this video, i will show you how to configure Port Forwarding in your router which will then forward all the traffic coming to a port on our Public IP address to a port on our Private IP address.
Here are some things you can do to make your harder to hack: Enable WPA2 and Create a Strong and Strong Pre-shared Key If you aren't using (WPA2) encryption to protect your then you might as well leave your front door wide open because hackers can virtually walk right into your network. If you're using outdated (WEP) security, which is easily cracked in seconds by most, you should consider upgrading to WPA2. May need a upgrade to add. Canon Ip2200 Driver Windows 7 64.
Check your router manufacturer's manual to learn how to enable WPA2 wireless encryption on your router. You will also need to make a strong (wireless network name). Turn on Your Wireless Router's Firewall If you haven't already done so, you should consider enabling your wireless router's.

Can help to make your network less visible to hackers looking for targets on the Internet. Many router-based firewalls have a 'stealth mode' that you can enable to help reduce your network's visibility. You will also want to to ensure that you have configured it correctly. Use an at the router level used to be a luxury that could only be afforded by large corporations. Now you can buy your own personal VPN service for a small monthly fee.
A is one of the biggest roadblocks you can throw at a hacker. A personal VPN has the capability to anonymize your true location with a and can also put up a wall of strong encryption to protect your network traffic. You can purchase personal VPN service from vendors such as, and others for as little as $10 a month or less.
If your router supports personal VPN service at the router level then this would be the best way to implement a personal VPN as it allows you to encrypt all traffic entering and leaving your network without the hassle of setting up VPN on your computers. Using the personal VPN service at the also takes the encryption process burden off of your client PCs and other devices. If you want to use a personal VPN at the router level, check to see if your router is VPN-capable.
Has several routers with this capability as do other router manufacturers. Disable the 'Admin Via Wireless' feature on your router Another way to help prevent hackers from messing with your wireless router is to disable the 'admin via wireless' setting. When you disable the 'admin via wireless' feature on your router it makes it so that only someone who is physically connected to your router via an access the admin features of your wireless router. This helps to prevent someone from driving by your house and accessing the administrative functions of your router if they've compromised your Wi-Fi encryption. Given enough time and resources a hacker might still be able to hack into your network, but taking the steps above will make your network a harder target which will hopefully frustrate a hacker and cause them to move on to an easier target.
